The Greeks believed that their gods had the same needs as human beings. They thought that their gods needed somewhere on Earth to live. Temples were built to be the earthy homes of the gods. Cities would compete with each other to build the largest, grandest and best decorated temple. The temple would often house a large statue of the god or goddess and often the treasures of the city would also be stored in the temple.
